Film Review: Uncut Gems
I watched this film as prep for my podcast, as I’d heard that Adam Sandler was finally given a role that gave him the legroom to expand as an actor, something that strayed from Waterboy, Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore. The impression that grew as I was about an hour and a half deep into this film is that it was crazy how a script and setting could be so eccentric and yet not very cinematic.
I actually really enjoyed this. While I insist there is more depth to it than its stereotype, a gangster/hustler kind of film that doesn’t follow the Tarantino-style quick camera switches and cartoonish chaos seemed more like the norm. The stress and manic events that this film undergoes constantly, but which gives you the credit of feeling it without music and high maintenance cinematography, it was like taking a deep breath in the Himilayas after labouring in a gym locker for months.
I’d say the I was mostly a fan of this layout though, the film was interesting and fun, not really exceptional. Adam Sandler’s performance was great, not incredible but it definitely gives him a decent amount of credit.
The finale was, as an act, the highlight for me, the confrontation, the stress and twists made for a seriously excellent final impression.
I’ve enjoyed quite a few films more than this but I simply have to give credit for the risk in the change of style.
