Film review: Marvellous
It does seem slightly off to review the quality of someone’s life story, especially as most people have very dull life stories indeed. As a timeline of life events go, who could say they had a more complex and adventurous life than Neil Baldwin. ‘Marvellous’ is a family film about a man who many would describe as somebody struggling with learning difficulties, but in reality rides the natural momentum of life, finding himself doing all kinds of things and meeting all kinds of people.
I can only give my opinion, and I rarely watch or overly enjoy family films. Relaxing dramas can often be teachable and certainly have an appeal to some people, but I didn’t necessarily feel that this film was among the quality I’ve seen. Having said that, had Neil Baldwin sat me down himself and narrated his life for me first-hand I’d have undoubtedly been in awe. The bottom line is, the production of Neil’s experiences was certainly a story worth telling, but perhaps only an interesting watch for some people.
While I didn’t get the biggest of kicks during this watch, I enjoyed myself at some of the charming moments and felt genuine sorrow at others. I wasn’t ever at the edge of my seat, but I certainly wasn’t bored, and I can imagine many people would absolutely adore this film. I was especially enticed by the scenes where the real person sat with their actor and had brief consults and discussions. Toby Jones has always been a very versatile actor at that and did a top job again here, I couldn’t possibly select a better casting.
Based solely on my enjoyment and not giving too much attention to the subjective view. I’d say Marvellous was a decent film, good in parts, but not a great film for me.
