Data analysis on crime near Guildhall walk in recent years
Guildhall walk (Portsmouth) is the most consistently busy area for nights out in Portsmouth, and I expected my data analysis to show an increase in crime leading up to Fresher’s month (September). However, this only occurred in 2017, so I studied the types of crimes.
What is clear from the data below is that, whilst the number of crimes didn’t really change, the more severe crimes such as violence and criminal damage take up a much larger portion. What is also worrying about the pie chart for 2018 is the first incident of weapon possession appearing. The website https://www.streetcheck.co.uk/crime/po54ls/2018/09 helped me gather the data, and https://infogram.com was useful for organising it.
Context, whether is readily apparent or not should be considered. Reported drug use and negative behaviour have gone down, but there’s a chance that offenders have become better at being discreet with drugs. Equally, negative behaviour may be as prevalent as before, but become regular for residents and perhaps unworthy of a report to the police.
What the data shows with surety is that there could be a problem with violence appearing around Guildhall walk, more specifically around nightclub areas.
